U.K. Withdraws Diplomatic Staff from Iran as U.S. Airstrikes Continue

The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) announced the temporary withdrawal of all remaining U.K. staff from Iran on Wednesday, July 22, citing the ongoing security situation as U.S. airstrikes entered their 12th consecutive day.

The British Embassy in Tehran will continue to operate remotely, but the FCDO warned that no face-to-face consular assistance will be possible. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened further strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, including the Pickaxe Mountain site, according to officials.

Iran’s negotiating chief, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, responded on social media: “The equation of this war is clear: All or nothing. In a region where we do not sell oil, no one will sell oil. If our security is not guaranteed, no infrastructure will be safe.”

U.K. Staff Withdrawal and Warnings to Nationals

The FCDO stated: “Due to the ongoing security situation, we have taken the precautionary measure to temporarily withdraw U.K. staff from Iran. Our embassy continues to operate remotely.” The ministry continues to advise against all travel to Iran and urged British nationals already in the country to carefully consider the risks of remaining.

British and British-Iranian dual nationals face a “very high risk” of arrest, detention and questioning, according to the FCDO. Officials said that simply holding a British passport or having perceived connections to the U.K. could be enough for Iranian authorities to detain someone. The FCDO warned that U.K. government support for Britons in Iran is “extremely limited.”

Escalation of U.S. Attacks and Iranian Response

The U.S. has carried out mass airstrikes across Iran since July 8, targeting military infrastructure and hitting a bridge connecting the cities of Roudan and Bandar Abbas, according to reports. U.S. Central Command said strikes targeted command and control centers, missile and drone launch sites and air defenses to “further degrade Iranian military capabilities.” ^[1]

Ghalibaf warned that if Iran’s security is not guaranteed, no infrastructure will be safe and the key to the security of the Strait of Hormuz lies in the absence of American forces. Trump threatened to destroy an Iranian bridge or power plant every time Tehran attacks a ship in the strait. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Tehran of not being “serious” about negotiations, according to officials. ^[2]

Regional Impact and Travel Disruption

British nationals across the Middle East have been told to prepare for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and other travel disruption. Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed they attacked two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, threatening a second vital energy route through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. ^[3] Five tankers reportedly changed course in the Red Sea, with three carrying Saudi oil to China and India forced to turn back.

Bahrain’s military reported Iranian strikes targeting civilians, and early warning sirens sounded in the eastern Saudi city of Dammam. Jordan’s military said six Iranian missiles entered its airspace this week, with four intercepted and two falling in remote areas. A vessel caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations agency. ^[1]

Mediation Efforts and Risk of Further Escalation

Mediators have reportedly presented Iran with a proposal for a 10-day ceasefire aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. British officials warned there is a risk of further attacks and “unforeseen escalation” across the Middle East.

The FCDO advised staying away from security and military facilities and keeping departure plans under review. A historical pattern of reluctance to negotiate has been noted by observers; as Noam Chomsky documented in earlier conflicts, “Fear that sanctions might have worked animated Washington’s refusal to test Iraqi withdrawal offers.” ^[4] British officials now warn that the situation could deteriorate rapidly.
